Jowls: How To Treat Sagging Jowls

Let's face it, the term “jowls” isn’t exactly synonymous with youthfulness or healthy-looking skin. Jowls, or the lower, dropping part of the cheek, can be challenging to treat. If you want options to tighten, tone, and firm jowls and restore your confidence, keep reading!

What Are Jowls?

Jowls occur when skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag around the jawline, creating fullness at the chin. These sagging areas may extend from the nasolabial folds (the creases on either side of your mouth and nose) to just below your chin.

What Causes Jowls?

The appearance of jowls happens due to the aging process of the skin. Several factors cause the skin to age, wrinkle, and sag.

Collagen Loss

Collagen is a protein found in the skin. It’s the most abundant protein in your skin and responsible for keeping skin plump, firm, and youthful in appearance. In addition, collagen builds fat pads beneath the eyes, around the cheeks, and near the jowls, which give your face its contour and holds your skin in place.

As you age, you begin producing less collagen at a rate of about 1% per year starting at age 20. Research suggests that some of this collagen reduction involves aging fibroblasts, a collagen and connective tissue molecule.

Elastin Loss

Another protein found in the skin is elastin. Elastin is similar to collagen in that it helps support the skin’s contour and shape. In addition, however, the protein allows the skin to stretch and snap back into place.

As elastin decreases, our skin may begin to sag. You can see this type of loss by pinching the delicate skin on your neck. Also, if the skin doesn’t snap back after you release it, you’ve lost some skin elasticity. Loss of elastin can contribute to droopy, sagging skin, especially around the neck and jowls.

Cell Turnover

Skin cell turnover occurs more slowly with age. This slower turnover can create dull, lackluster skin and cause lines, wrinkles, and crepey skin to develop.

Free Radical Damage

Oxidative stress from free radicals can prematurely age the skin. They attack skin cells, causing uneven skin tone, rough skin texture, and dark spots. Free radicals can also attack your skin’s elasticity, making jowls worse.

How Can You Minimize the Look of Sagging Jowls?

A quick internet search about jowls will probably find you on the webpage of a plastic surgeon. While facelifts and “mini-lifts” are options for some, you should know you can get real, visible results with non-invasive methods. The best part? You can get those results in just minutes a day in your home.

At NuFACE, we give you the power of the microcurrent, a low-level electrical current that reaches deep into your skin to stimulate and rejuvenate the skin and facial muscles - without pain, needles, or downtime!

Microcurrent Technology

Dermatologists and aestheticians have been using microcurrent technology for years. NuFACE Devices are FDA-cleared and clinically proven to produce instant and long-term results in skin and facial muscles.

What Are the Benefits of Microcurrent Therapy?

Microcurrent Technology can help tighten, firm, and contour the appearance of the skin, including the neck and jowls. It can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, for smoother, more youthful-looking skin on the face and neck.

How To Add Microcurrent Therapy to Your Skincare Routine

The best time to start your skincare routine is now. NuFACE Microcurrent Technology is appropriate for all ages and skin types, and can be added into your existing skincare routine in just minutes a day for optimal results.
