Microcurrent

Achieve instant and cumulative results with the clinically proven benefits of microcurrent.

What is Microcurrent?

Microcurrent is a low-level current that mimics the body’s natural ionic flow1 and has been clinically tested to safely and effectively address a variety of skin concerns. Because microcurrent works virtually without sensation, the treatment is soothing and most clients feel nothing at all. Microcurrent treatments are popular in the beauty industry for providing both instant and cumulative results.

Microcurrent at various outputs and waveforms has been clinically shown to:

Stimulates the recovery of damaged tissue2
Re-educate the muscles
Improve muscle tone and contour in the face/neck
Temporarily improve local circulation
Aid in lymphatic drainage
Enhance product penetration
Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
Firm and tighten skin

Microcurrent is a safe and effective technology for clients who wish to attain and maintain a healthier, younger-looking appearance.

Origin of Microcurrent Therapy Treatments

Microcurrent has been used in the medical arena since the 1970s with the introduction of the TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine and was approved by the FDA as a nerve stimulator for pain relief, wound healing, and the treatment of Bell’s Palsy—a condition that causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face. All microcurrent stimulators are TENS devices and require a 510(K) Certification Class II Device, otherwise they cannot be sold in the US. This certification assures the device is manufactured to the highest standards. With the discovery of microcurrent therapy treatments and their low-level current retraining of the patient’s muscles, the FDA cleared muscle stimulators to provide a new anti-aging application for the cosmetology industry.

How does Microcurrent Treatment work?

Microcurrent is capable of facial stimulation, sending soft, gentle waves through the skin and down to the facial muscles. This gentle wave of energy is nearly identical to your body’s natural ionic flow and has been shown to increase ATP (bodies cellular energy) concentration up to 400%, while simultaneously stimulating protein synthesis and promoting amino acid transport2.

As we age, our skin’s natural ability to manufacture these protein fibers reduces, giving way to the multiple signs of aging. ATP’s increased production of proteins and amino acids during facial stimulation helps to energize and tone facial muscles over time—just like how exercise energizes and strengthens the muscles of our body. Unlike anywhere else on the body, the facial muscles are directly connected to the skin, so the result of energizing the muscle is often improved, providing a smooth and lifted appearance.

What Is ATP?

Adenosine Triphosphate, also known as ATP, is a vital energy molecule in all life forms. These molecules are those providing the energy for muscle contractions and nerve transmissions. ATP is our cells' primary energy fuel source and is needed for muscle contraction and relaxation. It also encourages the production of essential structural proteins, such as collagen, which acts like scaffolding to support the skin's structure, and elastin, which provides the recoil necessary for the skin to snap back into place.

Our bodies naturally produce and store ATP daily. As a result, our bodies have an overstock of ATP, which helps our devices get the results you have in mind. Therefore, we can all thank this little molecule for helping us attain and maintain our dream results.

Microcurrent Devices

Traditionally found at top spas and medical offices, at-home microcurrent devices have become one of the hottest innovations in the anti-aging industry. These portable devices allow clients to benefit from the immediate and long-term benefits of microcurrent therapy.

Microcurrent devices are regulated by the FDA in the US and international governing bodies globally, which enforce the highest standards for safety and require rigorous testing to gain clearance to be sold. However, not all devices sold into the market are cleared by the FDA and meet these international safety standards.

Clinical studies are commitments made by companies to show the true efficacy of their devices used—all studies are monitored and performed by professionals, such as dermatologists, to maintain the validity of the product.

The Importance of Skincare and Microcurrent Therapy

Our skin is the barrier that protects us from the outside world. As we age, our skin is chronically exposed to the sun and elements, which wear it down over time. Even with overcast skies, your skin is still be exposed to UV rays from the sun.

That being said, hydrating and protecting your face should be a critical first step in facial therapy. Your skin needs to be hydrated and taken care of first to attain and maintain the results you have been looking for. Drinking adequate water and applying sunscreen daily is the foundation of proper skincare. In addition, adding microcurrent technology to your existing skincare routine will help to revitalize and care for skin.

How Can I Maximize the Results of Microcurrent Technology?

Start by choosing a daily moisturizer that contains SPF protection. You should use a moisturizer in the morning and at night to support your skin barrier and hydration, and SPF 30 is crucial for working to protect your skin against harmful UV rays during the day.

At NuFACE, we refer to microcurrent as your exercise and skincare as your nutrition. Our devices are centered around making your skin the best it can be. These non-invasive devices do all the work, so you do not have to. However, you can always help maintain the work that has been done! Making sure your skin is enriched with nutrients and getting the proper protection from life's daily wear, and tear can help maximize those results.

What Is a Microcurrent Facial?

Microcurrent facials utilize low-level electrical currents that mimic your body’s natural ionic flow to sculpt and tone facial muscles. This results in an improved facial contour with tightened and lifted skin. In addition, most users say they barely notice when the device is on — the microcurrent waves are so frequent that they become virtually unnoticeable, resulting in a pain-free facial treatment that actually works.

Are Microcurrent Facials and Red Light Therapy Similar?

Red light therapy has become another popular skincare option, and red light therapy shares a few similarities with microcurrent facials:

Both are facial treatments that used to brighten, tighten, and improve skin texture

Both are celebrated and well-known treatments used in most medical facilities and skin centers because of their efficiency and safety

FDA-cleared and regulated

Non-invasive technologies

Address the same concerns of aging, discoloration, inflammation, and various other skin damages

How Are Microcurrent Facials and Red Light Therapy Different?

That said, red light therapy and microcurrent technology also differ in a few key ways:

Red light therapy is powered by red and blue (sometimes both) light

Microcurrent facials are powered by low-level currents that tone your facial structure

Red light therapy is used more for discoloration or dark spots

Microcurrent facials are used more for facial sculpting and toning
